OPEN CALL:
RESIDENCY AT THE JUVENILE DETENTION CENTRE IN LULEÅ

We are looking for a Finnish artist who wants to take part in a residency working at the Juvenile detention centre in Luleå
The residency will take place during the month of March 2020.  Together with the inmates and the local artist Helena Bergman, the selected artist will work and develop an experience-based installation within one of the open-air courtyards in the centre.

We are searching for a Finnish artist that has experience and knowledge working with video and sound art. Since the residency is taking place in a Juvenile detention centre in Luleå, it’s important that the artist has a basic understanding of the Swedish language and a genuine interest in working with participatory-based projects within a closed environment.

The Juvenile detention centre currently hosts nine male inmates aged between 18  - 24. The project and work will be carried out together with 4 participants. Most interns come from bigger cities in Sweden, such as Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg and they spend an average period of 2 years at the centre. During this time the detention centre organises regular daily routines, giving the inmates the opportunity to go to work or school, have leisure time, baking, work out and further activities.

The centre is located next to a custody centre hosting 30 inmates. Both facilities are run by 45 members of staff working as chiefs, nurses, program-coordinators, technicians, teachers, psychologists, facilitators etc. The institution is used to run a variety of projects including  collaborations with artists, thus a welcoming and supportive atmosphere is in place. It’s of paramount importance that the inmates keep contact with the outside world since the main purpose of the organisation is to reintegrate them in society after the sentence has been completed.

Since participants have other activities throughout the day, it is estimated that the allocated time for the project will be, during the morning or afternoon, between 3 and 4 hours per day. The artists will spend the remaining time planning activities and production of artwork.

The selected artist will have access to KKV, an artist centre fits out  with workshops, tools and a large variety of equipment and space for art work production. KKV has a nice one bedroom apartment in the city center of Luleå for artists in residence to live during the time period of the project. The apartment is 10 minutes away by bus from the Juvenile detention centre.

During the residency, the artist will:
  • Plan and carry out the activities and tasks together with the inmates and the local artist Helena Bergman.
  • Be in contact with the inmates as well as the staff at the detention centre.
  • Develop an art piece within one of the open-air courtyards at the Juvenile detention centre.
